What is Reflexology?

Reflexology has been around for thousands of years, but is still a mystery to some people. I often get asked 'what is Reflexology?' when people see the Foot Chart on the wall in my room. In the last couple of weeks I have been asked this question a number of times, hopefully this blog will help answer that question and tempt you in to trying MY ABSOLUTE FAVOURITE holistic treatment!

The above image was found in an Egyptian tomb in around 2350 BC and depicts a foot and hand reflexology treatment being carried out.

Reflexology works on similar principles to acupuncture there is a belief that energy channels flow through our body and if you start to feel unwell or get aches and pains that there is a blockage in the energy channels.

When performing a Reflexology treatment we use specific pressure movements that are firm but gentle in a specific routine on both of your feet. Reflexology can help unblock these and allow your energy to flow freely again.

Reflexology is a powerful but completely non invasive treatment. It is very relaxing and bring about a balance between your body and mind that is hard to describe ... you need to experience it!

I trained around 14 years ago and was taught using the foot map from The British School of Reflexology it was created by Ann Gillanders.

Here is a copy of the Reflexology Foot maps I use to locate areas of your body that are represented on your feet.

Reflexology Treatment

What happens during a Reflexology Treatment?

The first time I see you I will go through a comprehensive consultation and will need to ensure that there are no contraindications (e.g. fever, broken bone in area, contagious skin conditions) and that it is safe for the treatment to go ahead.

I carry out a reflexology treatments in my tranquil treatment room in my home. All you have to do is remove your shoes and socks. I will get you comfortable on the massage couch that is fully equipped with a heated blanket and soft throws. You will usually be laying down but if you prefer I can put the back up so you can be seated. Your knees and ankles will be supported using 2 bolster cushions.

Your feet will be sprayed with a hygiene spray then I will use a Mint and Tea Tree Reflexology Wax to begin with a massage and to connect.

The pressure used in the routine is firm but gentle, it does not hurt or tickle.

I will then work through the Reflexology Routine, I start on the right foot then move to the left, halfway through I will work over your bowel and intestines which requires me to work on both feet at the same time. I end the treatment with a foot massage.

Depending on feet size the treatment will be between 45-50 minutes.

Once complete you will be given a glass of water and I will go through with you any areas that I found congestion in your feet and where that represents on your body and I will go through the aftercare advice to ensure you get the most benefit from your treatment.

My clients report to feeling very relaxed after the treatment and often they have a lot of energy that day and the following day. There are so many benefits to this treatment, some of which are detailed in the image below.

I hope that has helped you understand a little more about Reflexology and what will happen during a treatment.

If you have any other questions please let me know. Laura x
